About Tikvah
The Tikvah Center is a registered Community-Based Organization (CBO) based in Siaya, Kenya, committed to strengthening communities and empowering individuals to thrive.
Our Story
Our story is inspired by the deep need to make faith and culture affirming, liberating, and empowering.

A Transformative Encounter
For our Co-Founder, Evans Onyango Nyesi, this conviction is deeply personal. Early in his journey, he engaged in preaching, including on sensitive topics such as HIV. On one occasion, after delivering a sermon in a judgmental and stigmatizing way, a young girl approached him.
The Power of Compassion
The pain in her eyes and the words she shared revealed the devastating effect of insensitive use of sacred texts, language, and stories. What was intended as guidance had instead disempowered her, leaving her feeling shamed, isolated, and fearful.
A New Understanding
This encounter profoundly shaped Evans' perspective: faith, when misused or applied without care, can harm rather than heal; culture, when wielded rigidly, can exclude rather than embrace.
